What is a fuseboard?

In the UK many homes are still equipped with an old style fuse box. We strongly recommend that you upgrade your fuse board for a new style consumer unit. This will provide better electrical safety to your property but more importantly, your family or tenants. A consumer unit will also ensure your home is up to the current standards of the electrical regulations.

If your property has an out-dated fuse board, it would definitely be a smart decision to have a new one professionally installed. Did you know that approximately 50% of fires in UK homes are caused by electrical faults? (That’s about 21,000 per year!) Bearing that in mind, there are of course many vital reasons and benefits as to why you should upgrade or replace your old fuse box to the modern consumer unit.
Safety
The safety of our customers is very important to us, and we know that having old fuse boards and non-compliant consumer units can put the electrical safety of your home or property in danger. Modern consumer units include Residual Current Devices (RCD) which are an essential safety device that switches off electricity in a millisecond if you get an electric shock. Old fuse boxes don’t have RCDs and can take significantly longer to switch off electricity –ultimately the difference between life and death. Therefore, the installation of a new distribution board will greatly improve the electrical installation safety within your home and more importantly, protect your family or tenants from the risk of electric shock or fires.
Compliance with Regulations
The current 18th edition BS7671 wiring regulations of 2020 require almost all new circuits within a domestic property to be protected with a Residual Circuit Device (RCD) to prevent shocks and fires. However, many homes around the country contain fuse boards that are not compliant with these current electrical regulations. We strongly recommend that you upgrade your fuse box for a new style consumer unit if you have not already in order to be in line with these regulations and most importantly to ensure safety.
